I am Mike Talia, a husband, father, outdoorsman, public servant, Army veteran, and lawyer running as a Republican candidate for the Montana Senate.
I have practiced law in Montana for almost twenty years, first in Great Falls and now in Helena. The clients I represent include ag producers, small businesses, government entities, and taxpayers. I previously served as a lawyer in active service with the Montana Army National Guard.
Service has always been a priority for me. I enlisted in the Army Reserve when I was in high school because I wanted to serve our country. I gave twenty years to the Army, which included a mobilization to Iraq in 2003 as a military policeman with the 341st MP Company and a mobilization in 2019 as a judge advocate with Special Operations Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve.
I proudly support civic organizations in my community. I am active in the Rotary Club and serve on the board of directors for Montana's Outdoor Legacy Foundation, Bike Walk Montana, and the Montana National Guard Association. I am a member and supporter of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and dedicate time to other causes as well.
My wife and I are fortunate to raise our family in Helena. We have two children, graduating in the classes of 2029 and 2032. My wife is an elementary school teacher. She gives her heart to ensure her students leave her classroom equipped with the skills needed to be responsible citizens and good neighbors. She's my hero, and I believe education is the foundation for a strong economy.
I value spaces for outdoor recreation. I have an office job, and getting out helps me clear my mind. I've run a few hundred-mile trail ultra marathons. I also enjoy mountain biking, tubing on the Missouri River, fishing, and taking my rifle for a walk in the fall when my freezer is empty. I ski, rock climb, and sometimes wander in the wilderness with a backpack. I also take my camper out to the Forest Service. I love doing these things with my family. Public land access is very important to me. So are private property rights. I have shown how the two can co-exist.
Agriculture and rural living are important to me, though I choose to live in town. We all depend on agriculture. The last farmer in my family was my grandfather, who kept orchards in California's Blossom Valley. I grew up in the agricultural San Joaquin Valley and resented being told how to live by urban people from big cities. Like many of our neighbors in Montana, I voted with my feet. I moved here for school and stayed. I want to preserve Montana as it was when I arrived, not change it. That’s why I decided to run for the Montana Senate. People are trying to change Montana in ways that make it harder for residents to thrive, and that concerns me. If it concerns you too, let's take action together.
I believe we need more common sense and respect for our neighbors. We should focus less on what our neighbors believe and more on loving our neighbors as ourselves. We need laws aligned with our Constitution that won’t be shredded in lawsuits. We need sound tax policies that ensure responsible government without pricing out those who drive our state's economy. We need the Montana we all deserve.
I want a legislature that governs rather than one that pontificates. I want a legislature that protects us from those who wish to do us harm, but not from ourselves. A legislature that creates conditions for individuals and businesses to thrive and then steps out of the way. I believe local communities should determine what is best for them. That our justice system must safeguard victims' rights, reform those willing to change, and confine the unrepentant. I believe our economic future depends on an education system that respects parents' involvement in their children's education while providing students with the tools necessary to become productive members of society. And I believe we should cherish God's natural gifts that surround us in our community.
It's time to stand up for the values that make Montana great. Let's go to work.
We can build an economy strong enough for our next generation to afford to live here.
Good government enables commerce and individual liberty. Your government should be accountable to you and not make decisions you can make yourself.
Water is a limited resource that needs to be carefully managed.
Public lands and access are an important part of our heritage and legacy.
The government should honor our individual right to privacy.
